    Begining
On April 23, 1982, a pioneering start-up became the Lotus Development Corporation, and the concept of delivering software to help people work more productively became a reality. That same year Lotus announced its first product at Comdex in Las Vegas.

April 23rd is a milestone for us, but also a chance for us to review our place in the development of the software industry and in the evolution of corporate responsibility and commitment to employees and society.

The product that Lotus announced at Comdex in 1982 was 1-2-3, the electronic spreadsheet package that, historians say, changed the world of computing -- for the first time users found an application compelling enough to buy a computer for, and the PC revolution was on Lotus didn't rest on its 1-2-3 laurels

Its research and development teams went to work designing products that have played to the human side of business. While some Lotus products have come and gone, they all have made an impact and contributed to the history of computing and working together. As the company that helped spawn the PC revolution, Lotus soon saw the limitations of the isolated PC and began planning for a new revolution.

    Notes makes it debut
In 1989, Lotus announced a product that would usher in that revolution, again changing the world of business computing. It was Lotus Notes. With this new group communications software, people could create and share information, using personal computers and local and wide area networks. With the introduction of Notes, the next phase of Lotus' history began.

    More than simple messaging
Early e-mail adopters began to realize that Lotus Notes offered much more than simple messaging. These users saw that Notes enabled sophisticated cross-organizational communication and collaboration. Seeing this potential, many customers began asking for more. These customers wanted features that would allow them to work together by helping to track and share documents with others, locate content experts across the organization and to engage in real-time communication. Notes has given birth to a portfolio of products and solutions that today do just that -- and have the potential to change the very fabric of how an enterprise functions....
